Blogs vs. Wikis

In terms of blogs and wikis, both have a similar concept about networking information and sharing information amongst each other online. With a blog, this can be established as a multi-person posting or singular person positing website, that makes information public by a series of blog posts on a blogger hosted web engine. It can only be made private if the blog owner requests it to be private that way nobody can see it.

A Wiki is more so a database of information that is networked and linked amongst a variety of people that can be a private collaborative database or a public encyclopedia like the Wikipedia page is. Both can be utilized in the business format in terms of the inclusion of company employees notes, commentary, excel spreadsheets, word documents, and company notes. Wiki's design helps to solve all these problems yet, unlike many traditional content management systems, remains simple enough for non-technical employees to use (Goodnoe, 2005).  This showcases the importance of convergence in the mass media networking that goes on over online or network databases. There is a creation of a stream of consciousness or extended thought over conversation. Not to mention different people on a blog, can comment and share information the same way they can on a wiki. With this meshing of information, over time this conversation over these media formats can settle their minds on one universal idea they can agree about with providing all sorts of perspectives on what works and what does not. Not to mention, site moderators can update the information that everyone will see and this would be accepted well researched and information backed info that all can standby and learn from.

With the convergence of ideas, this can be led into blog collaborations that happen almost daily with businesses, magazines, and other old media formats reaching out to blogs to secure support, information, and advertising of information on these blogs. For example, the rise of the fashion blogger is noted when they collaborate with brands which as Barneys New York and Gap to sort reach new consumers and get word out about their products. Not to mention this is also seen with newspapers whose own editors can have an extension of themselves on this blog and newspapers can cite information from them.

P.S.- A new wiki idea could be a database for homework help for college students where they can share databases such as old exams to study from, collaborate on study groups online, and do things such as group projects online. I know this could be hard to implement and would need moderators but its just an idea that I think has never been done in this sort of format.

Old vs. New Media

How do we distinguish “new media” from “old” media?

To distinguish new media from old media there are many ways to establish that. First, if we look at the digitalization of things like the internet newspaper website versus the regular paper printed newspaper format, the difference is evident. With the regular newspaper, all information is already set in stone, if one wants to continue to read it they would have to carry it around all day, and they are only allotted the news discovered from the day before or some sort of tip off about what is to come. For the internet website, it is easily viewed on a phone, one can sort through categories of what interests them through the click of a categorized tab, and the news can be instantaneous in terms of updates to that same article. Many times CNN and New York Times update their articles with new information as their reporters and editors learn it from tips and sources that same day. There is also portability but thats the way to distinguish for other forms of media.

Portability of items such as cellular phones, iPads, iPods, portable dvd players and handheld game systems can also help distinguish from old media things like landline phones, walkman portable cd players, television, earlier VCR and dvd players. For cellular phones, they are cordless, their broadband range has cell towers in most places across the world so one can make a phone call virtually almost anywhere (except underground where there is no signal), one can use applications such as calendars, to do lists, and use applications for their own livelihood. Regular phones one has to physically push buttons and wait for a response while this phone could only make and receive calls without any extra additions. For iPads and iPods, they represent the idea of applications like on a cell phone, one can use the internet, use the calendar, play games, watch videos such as Netflix, and have lifestyle applications like Mint, where they could keep a track of their finances. Without these advances, people would have to go to the bank, call their bank, use their television, buy a physical calendar, or find a computer to use all of these functions. Not to mention these devices also replaced the need for portable cd players because one can listen to music and download it instantly to their devices. No need to buy cds just for a certain song and one can save money in a sense. Another big one is the portable dvd player, if one wanted to see a movie, they wouldn't have to stay home and pop it into the dvd player just to watch it, they could carry it in this player that would be with them and watch and pause the film at anytime. This factors into convenience.

Lastly, if we look at convenience, we can see how the diversity of content such as news, online encyclopedias, and wikis are available at one's own time and needs that new media brings and old media lags behind in comparison. A person is now able to utilize the internet to reach a plethora of information for school assignments, entertainment, business news, and economics through the wikis, encyclopedias, and online websites for popular magazines that itemize them online readily available to read anywhere.

If we really look at new media versus old, it has become more personable in a sense and easier to use for anyone.

Describe New Media

The sort of technologies that make up what we call new media include digital technologies like digital television and digital video recorders. Also other forms of new media include the internet, video gaming, social media networks like Twitter and Facebook, websites that hosts online blogs, wikis, and newspapers and blu-ray and DVD disc technology.

We distinguish these new forms of media from the old ones because they involve a sense of going digital in terms of instantaneous information and the plethora more readily available choices that new media has to offer. In the "Greatest Change in the History of Media" by Vin Crosbie, Mr. Crosbie discusses this in terms of people are readily choosing new media because the digital composition gives people more access to choices like news, entertainment and information. With this, the change in media like internet on cell phones and social media commentary makes information travel much more faster than reading a book or newspaper to get that information and news now comes out by media outlets online faster than the newspaper can do.

With the newspaper and analog television being old media, these forms are limiting and can only go so far. The newspaper is a final product of fact checking by editors, assistants, and all stories are pre-approved by the management to be sent out the next day and the next day. With online blogs and the internet with networks like social media, news can be changed and updated by the minute with actual fact checking being primary sources at the scene of the event with video footage and in person interviews. And this footage or interview can be posted online within minutes and spread the news very quickly. With the newspaper, they would have to print a retraction or do a follow up story the next day about the same news from the day before. With the internet, it is instantaneous and constantly updated. Another example is the excerpt of the Computerworld magazine from 1985 that can be seen to showcase the old media format of magazines and newspapers that were not interactive and had no way to be changed when finally printed, unless one had to go through retraction, even so that would cost money. With the internet of new media, information can be changed without even costing anything and it is within the minute.

For analog television, it was all about  turning the television set's buttons in order to pick up sound, visuals, with respect to receiving signals to do so. This old media transitioned to include digital television technologies because one is able to immediately receive sound and picture at the same time from a set top box called cable. Not to mention, there is the inclusion of digital recording in which, one can record shows with the touch of a button and it is stored in their set top box to be viewed at anytime. For old media, one would probably have to use a VCR with a recording tape to capture what recorded show they wanted. If we even go back further to a time without VCRs, there would be not recording function for televisions at all!

All in all, the Old Media to New Media transition of technology is really dynamic and the changes are not hard to understand as it makes life easier and the availability of information more accessible, not to mention it is being respectful of people's preferences as well, making new media have a personal connection with anyone.

What is New Media?

Reading through the ideas acknowledged in the assigned readings and actually experiencing first hand the power of new media and the connectivity it has to all spectrums truly show how much technology has developed. The different types of technologies that are apart of the new media are: the internet, internet websites (blogs, wikis, social media platforms such as twitter, tumblr, facebook, myspace), video games, dvds, blu-ray, digital television, DVR/Tivo programs, and portable devices.

If we take a look at the internet specifically, its importance to the new media is very telling in the fact that it serves as the medium of how to obtain information, make money, and facilitates the spread of information and ideas in fast manner. The interface of the internet that has different websites you can assess in terms of the https format has the power for people to access databases such as start up companies advertising and selling their technologies and products. Also the mass of information that is readily available helps those seeking news, research and other important information to look on databases or websites that has them. Not to mention the ever important spread of ideas between all different types of people can be shared and thoughts can be picked apart by others on the internet in terms of blogs, wikis, social media websites such as twitter, and of course a comments section on all websites.

For example, in the Clive Thompson Youtube article, he discusses about the evolution of videos that could be made by anyone to evoke attention and it's freedom to express any content it wishes. As little as it may seem, it can still garner thousands of views on Youtube. He also briefly alludes to the anonymity of the internet when he says, "All these people from across the globe convey something incredibly evocative while remaining completely mute." This means that the evolution of social media on the internet and spread of ideas made people that were completely anonymous before, have a platform to express their opinions and thoughts all the while evoking attention to their own space on the internet. This brings us to what new media's relationship with old media is.

If we take a look at the differences between new and old media, it is incredible how adaptive or replaceable certain forms of old media is towards new media and the new way of thinking. We can see the example of television, portable media, and the internet. The transition from analog television to digital television showcases the adaptation of TV channels readily available in a box top format from cable companies. Then it evolved that instead of basic channels, we get hundreds of different channels that we pay for from all different genres such as movie channels, sports, and foreign channels. Then in the case of the new media we have today technologies such as Hulu, Network Websites, TiVO, Apple TV, and DVR, where you can record and watch TV programming later on or fully watch them online. This enhanced the old media idea of sitting around a television because you can multitask and save time to watch things on and off time instead of being confined to watch a program at a certain time. This idea of watching shows online at anytime you want showcases autonomy in making television programming work into your schedule and when you are bored you can access it wherever you wish. Though it does not replace the old model because some people still watch television through their television sets to see things large on screen and live, if they watch sporting events and shows religiously.

If we also look at internet websites such as social media sites like twitter, facebook, blogs, wikis, and media company websites, it shows how new media replaces and somehow enhances old media to deliver information at any given point and helps people interact with information and each other even more. For example with blogs and wikis, information is readily available and someone's opinion piece is published online and available for anyone to read and consent or disagree with. This information can be truthful, biased, a first hand account of thoughts on certain ideas but it will always come from that person without some form of censory unless indicated.

In a way, the wikipedia pages, blogs, and the online publications that replace pre-existing newspapers is the evolution of information readily available at one's fingertips. Even newspapers and magazines that were a newsstand staple are now digital and online newsstands are the norm. You can utilize your internet to access online columns on specific things such as economics, opinion pieces, and world news that interest you. With these newspapers, they are starting to adopt the new online publication viewing module because they might lose readers that they usually have on their paper printed publications which some people buy still but majority are turning to their online web pages for information. They are attracting those that are at work on a break looking to online for the news of whats going on when they don't have the newspaper or television to do so. For example, the New York Times now offers online access to their articles and subscriptions online for those who use their media site solely. This therefore shows the commitment and adaptations old media and new media is making in their relationship to the future.
